Don't Break the Bank with Your Home Renovation

Bearing in mind the present financial situation, many people have decided not to rejuvenate their dated home because it's too costly. If you're in that same predicament, you can take solace from the fact that that you can give your house an overhaul with some key improvements and not having to spend all of your savings.

Remodeling the Basics on a Budget

Begin with basics when mulling over a home rehab project. Start from the top of the room and work your way down. This is the foundation for your home rehab project. If you have an acoustic ceiling, consider either repainting it a bright white or hiring someone to scrape it and re-plaster it with a smooth pattern. Don't forget to paint on a high-grade primer before your paint coat! Next, look at the walls and consider a neutral color that will go with a brighter and more natural mood and will go with any designs and decorations. Fix any holes and marks in your walls and doors so your home looks fresh and refinished. Next, continue with the floor areas: are the flooring and baseboards in fair condition? If so, re-paint the baseboards a nice white color to make everything look brand-new again. If you plan to rip out and re-cover the floors, consider porcelain tiles, because they are relatively cheap per square foot and stay looking new much longer than carpet does. If you will be installing carpet, choose a dense pile that is a shade of brown or beige so that marks from food and drinks won't show much and the carpet will resist crushing for a long time.

Kitchens and Bathrooms are Key

Modernizing your bathrooms and kitchen are the wisest fixes you can put into your house. If the cabinetry is in good structural shape, consider either restaining the existing cabinets or buying new doors. If you will be re-facing them, get a good hammer drill and detach the hinges and handles from the cabinet doors to release them. If needed, new doors can be purchased from your local do-it-yourself store. For bigger savings, re-stain your own doors. Again, remove the doors from the cabinets and then brush on a paint remover to the existing finish and scrape it off with a special scraper made from hard plastic just for this purpose. Once all of the finish has been removed, sand the cabinets the first time with a drum sander using medium-grit sandpaper. A finishing sanding should be done with a fine-grit sandpaper after that. Rub the cabinets with a cloth to remove the dust and then spread a wood conditioner to the cabinets. To conclude, stain or paint the wood and complete it with 2-3 clear coats to protect the new finish from water splashes.

How to Stretch Your Design Dollar

Improving your decorative items is an uncomplicated, but significant way to make your living quarters looking sharp. There are great deals at estate sales, second-hand shops, or on the Web which will save money. For even bigger savings, create furniture by yourself. You can make a gorgeous headboard, for example, with nothing more than two oversized wooden spindles, a lathe machine (you can borrow this from someone), and a large rectangle of board made of wood. Cover the wood centerpiece with some batting, fabric, and decorative upholstery pins for a new headboard that is sure to impress!

Perhaps you're fixing up a new home or wanting to re-do the one you live in. Either way, these unique ideas for getting the place you live to look its best will help your house look like new without spending a ton of dough in the process.

Making Your Car Run Smoothly with Car Care for Less

For many of us, our car is a very important part of our lives. Cars give us a chance to be free to go anywhere, as far as we feel like going, and at whatever time we want. You probably worked hard to save every spare dollar so you had enough for a down payment. Each month you have to keep making your car loan payment and afford insurance coverage. But when your car needs auto care, the extra expenditure can throw your budget off. That’s why these tricks for getting low-cost auto parts and automobile repair tools can make an important difference in your budget at the end of the month.

Save Money on Maintenance and Automotive Repair Tools

If you have a maintenance issue, such as an oil change, brake pad replacement, or burned-out light, why not save money and do it yourself? There are many "how-to" online tutorials and printed books that can show you step-by-step. The bonus is that you’ll only be spending money on the parts and supplies.. The auto repair shops can really mark up the parts, plus, you’ll pay around $60 to $70 an hour for someone else to do the work for you. If you aren’t comfortable with doing any of these tasks yourself, ask your family or friends if they can help you out or if they know someone who can help at a low rate. Family members are usually happy to help and don’t expect much in return; student training facilities can cut the costs in half for you.

Auto Care Costs: Automotive Parts and Services for Less

Additional non-major repairs that require a little more skill can still be accomplished by yourself. Take, for example, replacing spark plugs, determining an error code on your dash, or getting that wobble in your rotors taken care of. Local auto engine parts stores oftentimes offer services for a nominal cost that would otherwise cost you hundreds of dollars or more if you took it to an auto repair shop. Engine error codes can be ambiguous and aggravating. In some states, you can drive to your parts supplier and they can run the diagnostic test for you to determine the problem. However, some localities don’t allow this, but the tool itself is offered for sale for around $200. If you went to the dealer every time, you’d spend about $100 each time you need to diagnose a problem. But you can have this tool in your arsenal of automotive repair tools for about what it would cost to visit the dealer twice!

Basic Maintenance and Auto Care Don’t Have to Break the Bank

Resurfacing rotors can present challenges because they have to be “meaty” enough before they can be resurfaced. A minimum millimeter of metal is required so that they remain at a reliable depth. The good news is that many shops will measure them for you and tell you right there if they can be resurfaced. Additionally, they have the machine right there to get the job done. Just as simple, you can buy spark plugs at the car care and supply store and the minimum gap is displayed right on the package. A gapper tool for your spark plugs costs only $50 or less if you don’t already have one. With only a standard lifting jack, you can rotate your own tires.

You can save major cash by doing the minor repairs on your car. You can extend your car’s life and get more out of your hard-earned dollars, and use the additional cash to spend more time enjoying life!
